Mayor Smith and City Council Members
Once again, I urge you to deny the request of the Planning Commission, regarding the Ordinance for Transient rentals.
We already have laws and ordinances pertaining to health and safety measures. The proposed ordinance insinuates that year round rentals and year round housing do not pose threats; and these threats only pertain to transient rentals. Do other homes not have a danger of fire when faulty and excessive appliances are installed? Is there no pest infestation, debris, trash or unsanitary conditions? One only has to walk a short distance around town to know that this is NOT the case.
Parking problems are NOT caused by transient rentals. Transient renters DO NOT bring vehicles with them.
The long term financial impact of this ordinance is staggering! Approximately 50% of the citys income is from rentals. Where is the money going to come from to maintain critical services?
You and prior councils have worked hard for many years to develop Avalon into a wonderful, family oriented, year round resort. Why would the Planning Commission want to reverse what has taken 40 years to accomplish? If we reduce the number of families who can visit, well get back to having a 4 month a year resort. While some people might like this, think of the economic impact this will have. A major concern of the planning commission is lack of year round housing. If this ordinance passes, housing wont be a problem. So many jobs will be eliminated that there will be many places to live of course, only a few will have any money to rent them.
This ordinance is discriminatory and self serving for a handful of people. Please reject the proposal in its entirety and work together with all homeowners to ensure that Avalon remains the "Nantucket of the west".
Sincerely,
Susan Anderson
